Day 15

Somewhere I did something wrong for my body is mad at me today.

Today is day 15 and I think all of the energy I have had in the last few days has finally been used up.

I have been tired, very tired and lethargic all day. Unmotivated and just overall lazy. I'm not sure where I went wrong with this, but if I can find something I did different from yesterday I could blame the pizza. The food from Au Lac was too good to be mad at, so I can't blame them. Z Pizza can bite my...

... where was I, right, lethargy. I even took a 15 minute 30 minute 45 minute 1 hour nap and still felt pretty lousy. By 3pm I decided that I was getting coffee, I needed to be productive and I had things to do. I walked to get a small coffee and then by 5pm I went to a free Jeet Kune Do class for an hour. Does it make sense to be lethargic but easily motivated? What the heck is broken today?

Breakfast

Lunch
All American Sandwich from Veggie Grill
Steamed Kale salad

Dinner
Smart dog / Smart Chili

Day 14

Today is the half way point of the 28 day challenge.

I feel good, actually, I feel great. I'm not seeing the kind of results I want, but my energy level gets better each day. There's something fun about running experiments on myself. I'll have to look into doing more.

I decided to get a vegan pizza from Z Pizza. Granted it wasn't the one I saw in the menu, but what ever, it had more vegetables that I thought were going to be on it. However, I think I'm broken from even having fake cheese! Oily gross mass of stuff. I can go without. Now it's a texture and a flavor thing. The Daiya brand cheese creates a substance that I can only describe as being "a thick flavored glue" and comes off as being very much not natural.

I suppose the fine line between "Plant-Based" and "Vegans" can be drawn at the food chemistry labs. There's isn't any weird science going on with Plant Based eating from what I've seen so far. I won't call seitan a weird science as it is made up of pretty simple ingredients.

I had a craving for rich flavor and greens which brought me back to Au Lac in Fountain Valley. There I indulged in the BBQ "Pork" rolls and a fake chicken that came with brown rice and broccoli. Very good if you are ever in the area.

Breakfast
Tofu scramble & black bean burrito

Lunch
Z-Pizza personal vegan pizza.

Snack
Celery w/Peanut Butter

Dinner
Au Lac BBQ Pork Roll
rice paper, barbecued soy pork, pickled daikon and carrot, chive, peanut sauce

Roasted Chicken

Day 13

I keep forgetting to take photos of what I'm cooking. I have about two weeks to get at least one finished right?

Today was all about new and improved Ryan. I signed up for a free 30 days at OC Kickboxing with the idea in mind of taking Jeet Kun Do. They had me do an intro class of Muay Thai Kickboxing which is structured a lot like regular boxing, but with kicks included. My next class will be Jeet Kun Do on Monday. The extra workout should (hopefully) boost me into a higher caloric burn.

I had a late lunch which begat a late dinner. I hate that phrase "Hindsight is 20/20" but I really do wish I was prepared for even a snack. Note to self: But carrots and celery and keep them with you... sheesh.

Breakfast
Tofu scramble and Black Bean Burrito

Snack
Hummus with Rice / Nut Flour Crackers

Lunch
Tofu / Veggie Skewer with a tomato chili sauce (at Disney California Adventure)

Dinner
Tempeh BTL on Whole Grain

Day 12

Currently 214
This mornings weight-in is 210!

So all in all, being on this for just under 2 weeks and loving 5-6 pounds is pretty good. Any complaints that I've had before have gone a bit. I'm okay without cheese and other dairy, but eggs and oil are in everything that I perceive as being good... but processed foods aren't tasting good to me as much as they did.

My energy level is just good. I was up and moving from 7am to midnight. I did take a 15 minute nap, but only to see if that would boost my energy levels and it did. Naps are great! Coffee is still an addiction, but that is okay for now.

Breakfast
Simple Cereal

Lunch
Avocadilla (I think I'm out of avocado's now)

Dinner
TVP burritos w/ spring mix, salsa and black beans

Day 11

** I've added the Avocadilla to the recipes page **

I managed to go all day yesterday without coffee and today it was all I could think about. Crazy addictions I suppose.

Today was a test of wills by dinner time and I'm very proud to say that I was successful. While I still have the cookie cravings, the pizza cravings have kind of gone away and that makes me sad. I am quite fond of pizza... except that new monstrosity by Pizza Hut, Hot Dog Stuffed Crust with Mustard Drizzle. Are you f'ing kidding me?! Being breaded and deep fried are the only things missing from this slice of a quadruple bypass.

This is real because you can't make this stuff up!
After being on this plant-based challenge for what feels like a lifetime, things like this look like something on Funny or Die. I'm glad I became a vegetarian by the time KFC's Double Down came out.

Back to today.

Breakfast
Simple Cereal

Lunch
"Avocadilla"

Snack
Pita bread with Hummus

Dinner
Mother's Market "Tahiti Fusion Wrap"
Whole grain wrap, tempeh, green leaf lettuce, avocado, carrots, bean sprouts... other vegan stuff

Day 10

18 days to go and maybe I'll have a longer stretch without f'ing up the game plan.

What have I been saying since the beginning here? Ask. It never hurts to ask. I suppose there is that fear of "Never question the people that handle your food" that I have burned in my head... not from personal experience mind you, but just fear that someone will spit in my food because I asked too many questions or complained.

That being said... Perhaps I can consider today as my "Get out of jail free card"... they have those for health don't they?

How do I feel after eating crap food? I feel like crap. I feel sluggish and cloudy. I like the feeling I get from good food more. Damn, I really was hoping I'd be able to celebrate the end of this with an extra cheese pizza, but it's looking like I'll be grazing instead.

Breakfast
Simple Cereal
Whole grain english muffin w/peanut butter

Lunch
Avocado on Whole grain tortilla "Avocadilla"
Spring Mix with salsa

Snack
Shaved Ice

Dinner
Tofu Pad Thai from Pick up stix

Day 9

I said I was going to begin with the weigh in, so here we go... drum roll...

Currently 214

And the new total for day 9 is 211! Through all the hiccups and false starts that I've had, this is the best and quickest result that I've seen yet and I feel good doing it.

What I said yesterday about the creativity surging is now an understatement. I feel empowered with the creativity of a god right now... still the motivation of a man, so nothing is really being done with it. But the crap that is stirring in my head is wonderful and amazing... take my word for it.

Today, my father and I went to Au Luc, a Veg / Raw Vietnamese restaurant in Fountain Valley. This place has the traditional Vietnamese menu with a options for raw which is nice when I can afford to go that route again. My father being a retired meat cutter of many many years really enjoyed himself as well as the flavor of the fake meats.

Exercise will have to be doubled tomorrow as I did some walking today, but not enough to count for much.

Until tomorrow!

Breakfast
2 Vegan Banana Nut Muffin
Half-Decaf Coffee

Lunch (@ Au Luc, split between 2 people)
BBQ Pork Roll
rice paper, barbecued soy pork, pickled daikon and carrot, chive, peanut sauce

Dinner
Left over Chickpea of the Sea on crackers
Decaf Coffee

Day 8

I was going to buy cookies today. I really was. I went to the market to buy 3 cookies to go with my 1/2 decaf coffee and wouldn't you know it, they were all out! Today the universe was my sponsor.

I walked 2.42 miles today in about 34 minutes, pretty good change from last weeks time of 2 miles at 38 minutes. I love seeing results.

Take a look at ChickPea of the Sea, this was probably the best non fake meat fake tuna recipe I've come across and it'll run you under $3 to make. The recipes did call for 1/4 cup of Mayo, in which I used a tbsp of vegan mayo. I would have made a batch of silken tofu mayo, but I didn't have any on hand and I didn't prepare for it. I'm seeing a running theme. How about you?

Go get the MapMyWalk app. The only way I would have been happier with that app is if I came up with it myself... and I should have!

My observations today-
  • Today's energy level has been very steady up until right about now where I am feeling extremely tired... like exhausted tired.
  • While making my sandwich for dinner I was happy and almost excited to find a tomato and onion to put on it. 3 years ago I would have been just as happy to find bacon to put on a real tuna sandwich.
  • My creativity feels like it has sharpened a lot in the last week. I'm looking forward to seeing what I create.

I'll do a weigh in tomorrow
.

Breakfast
Simple Cereal
2 left over Banana Walnut Buckwheat pancakes (I'm finally out of them!)

Lunch
Chili Dogs

Dinner
ChickPea of the Sea on whole grain
Collard leaf wrapped Brown short grain rice

Day 7

"And on the seventh, he screwed up and barely ate anything..."

I think it went something like that.

Today was a busy one. Plans from 9am to roughly midnight and I didn't plan ahead like I've been saying since the beginning of this blog. I will say that as far as energy levels are concerned, I haven't stayed out to midnight in a while, let alone kept moving for 15 hours. It's safe to say that this challenge is not wearing me down a bit.

I think coffee might be though. Tomorrow is going to be a half decaf day and then maybe the fake stuff by Tuesday or Wednesday.

I went to a party that had a lot of great looking food that normally I would have hovered over and snatched "just one more" a few times over. I held my ground and had very good restraint... until the drive home. It was 5pm and I hadn't had anything but a cup of raw veggies and almonds at 1. I stopped off at In n Out and got a veggie, which is everything but the meat. I overlooked the question of "do you want spread on that" and just smiled and nodded because I wanted food now! The spread is basically thousand island dressing, which is banned from this challenge for all sorts of reasons.

I can say that this challenge is making a vegan out of me since a little sauce had my stomach turning for the 2 hour drive home. I'm not happy about this because I love cheese... but I like feeling good more I suppose.

Here we go:

Breakfast
2 Banana Walnut Buckwheat Pancakes
1 cup tofu scramble

Lunch
Cup of mixed veggies from Disneyland - Bring your own, not worth the $4 for what you get.

Dinner
2 Veggie sandwiches from In n Out

Day 6

This challenge is getting easier and easier.

I do have to change what I said yesterday about the cookies. I'm not sure if process rice flour counts as it is... well, processed. I'll assume it didn't and I failed a bit. That being said, how does seitan qualify as part of this diet if it is wheat gluten? It is processed still isn't it?

A friend mentioned that I would probably be feeling an energy boost provided I was doing the challenge correctly. She was correct. I went to 24 Hour Fitness this morning and after 10 minutes on the treadmill I did 3 set of 12 back-press @ 60 lbs, 3 sets of 12 lat pulldown @ 90 lbs, and 3 sets of 12 rowing also @ 90 lbs. After that I drove to Mile Square Park and walked two miles in about 30 minutes.

What do you think about this blog becoming more photo and video based? Do you want to see some recipes made? I'm thinking that I'll choose one meal to make step by step and maybe wrap up the week with a video. I'll figure that one out.

Today I had to change things up only because I was getting sick of lentil leftovers. Trying to add more dark greens should be a lot easier than it has been. Just add them right?

Breakfast
3 Banana & Walnut Buckwheat Pancakes
1/2 tbsp Maple Syrup
Tofu Scramble

The pancakes are a sad sight, but they came out to be very good and filling.

Lunch
3/4 cup Hummus
2 Whole grain Pita bread

Snack
2 Celery
Peanut Butter

Dinner
2 Collard leaf wraps with Brown Sushi Rice

Day 5

Day 5

I'm having doubts that the coffee thing is going anywhere. The fake coffee is fine when I'm home, but when I'm out I really want to have a cup... All in all, I've had about 4 cups of coffee today. Why am I not using decaf? Or tea even! I own enough of the stuff.

I had lunch at the Orange Circle with my sister. Not seeing as many options as I had hoped for, we split a veggie sandwich on a white hoagie roll (without cheese or oil... remember, all you gotta do is ask).  It's only been 5 days and I noticed that processed breads have a texture very close to that of a marshmallow.  I suppose that is a good thing since I'm not a fan of marshmallows. There is a small vegan / gluten free market we found that sells fresh baked cookies. Yes, I bought cookies and they appeared to be part of this challenge. I will be duplicating the recipe in the coming days.

If you haven't been to the Orange Circle, I recommend it. I had a nice sense of calm that I used to get when I lived in Savannah GA.  There are a ton of antique stores, so if you enjoy that sort of thing... bring money.

I started using the MapMyWalk app today... and I swear I already posted about this, maybe in another draft somewhere. This app uses your GPS to keep track of time, speed and distance. I walk about 2 miles at about 38 minutes, I'll beat my time tomorrow. There are apps that map your biking and running as well if you are interested. My energy level is good. It could be the food or it could be the coffee.

(UPDATE: I'm not crazy! I did post the MapMyWalk. It's on the Workout section)

There was no butter or oil used to grill my sandwich this evening. I'm almost sad to say I didn't miss it or really notice it for that matter. This happened with my raw fast too, the taste buds open up and you actually start to taste things for what they are and not what ever sauce they've been drowned in.
Leave me some comments, I would like to know what you guys are thinking or if you have any suggestions. I hope to have enough readers so I can post a poll for future menus.

Breakfast
Tofu Scramble w/ Hash Brown on a whole wheat tortilla

Lunch
Half veggie sandwich from some place in the Orange Circle

Snack

Dinner
Grilled Whole Grain sandwich with Hummus, cucumber, spinach, tomato, avocado.
Tabatchnick Lentil Soup

Day 4

Hello Day 4 of 28.

I've decided not to weigh myself daily as the results are not helping my motivation. I haven't gained, but I haven't lost either. These things take time.

Creative sparks are firing and I'm looking forward to see what I'll come up with next. Last year during a raw fast I came with a great idea that I need to finish. I'd go into more detail, but I'll wait until it is much closer to completion.

The water bottle is a proven success. I feel good and hydrated... carrying around a barrel of water like I am. It has also curbed the coffee cravings a bit because it is keeping me busy and full of liquid.

Going back to day 2, I had trouble working with what was available for me out of the house. I had a similar experience today with be being away from home and only bringing my jug of water. Meal and snack prep will be he focus of next week. I want to make sure that I carry something with me to keep me from the cravings that I had after skipping out on lunch.

Breakfast
Simple Cereal

Lunch
none

Snack
Trader Joe's Trail mix
Wasa Crackers w/ Peanut Butter
Raw Pumpkin crackers

Dinner
Miso Brussels Sprouts
Lentil Tacos on Savoy Cabbage

Day 3

Today my weight is 214.

I had hoped for a greater difference but I suppose this is why I have failed at most diets and exercise routines. I like seeing results fast and when I don't see them, I tend to give up. This where the blog comes in, I get to stay motivated and hopefully entertain the readers.

I've created a progression graphic... which is below. It's pretty simple at the moment, I'll probably make it more complicated in the coming days.
Currently 214

Pretty neat... As long as it works across all browsers of course.

Today was good. I woke up with a good energy level and just felt productive. My exercise today was cleaning my room for a few hours. As Zen Buddhism is teaching me, a clean home creates a clean a mind.

Also, I did purchase a half gallon bottle to hold my water. This will probably work the best as I won't have to refill it as much and I get to stay hydrated!

"I really hate that man." Yes, yes, everything I have been eating has been plant based, not raw pure form plant, but plant derived.  It's a fascinating experience to think that what I'm eating can be grown quickly and be good for me. I have had the cabbage leaf, broccoli or spinach. Don't worry, I have plans. I have Brussels Sprouts for tomorrow. My own recipes are coming into play.
Walking through the local health food store today and I over heard someone saying "Oh no, I never juice only blend because juicing removes all of the fiber..." I've had conversations like this before, and everyone will say something different. How can everyone have a difference in opinion and be right at the same time? Maybe this is why I'm going through all of the eating habits and diets available because I'm trying to figure out what makes them work.
Here is the conclusion I'm drawing:
  1. Dairy is bad period. I'm fond of the saying "Humans are the only animal to drink another animals milk" I had a brief stupid moment that I'll share with you when I said to myself "Oh yeah, well what about cats!" *Face Palm (Cat's have no thumbs or milking stools small enough to sit on silly)
  2. Meat needs to be redefined to cover all muscle tissue critters (Why the dictionary still covers meat as being only mammals is confusing to everyone and the reason why many will consider themselves vegetarian while still eating chicken)
  3. The safest food is the food you make at home. Read ingredients and don't buy items if they contains words too scientific to pronounce.

Breakfast
Simple Cereal
Sprouted Wheat English Muffin w/Peanut Butter

Lunch
Lentil Tacos with savoy cabbage wrap

Dinner
Smart Dogs with Smart Chili (Yes, it's on the list as it contains no oil, no saturated fats, basic ingredients and is under 2% fat per 100 calories.)

Day 2

I think yoga from yesterday has made me sick. Or maybe it was the pot of fake coffee I had last night. I feel ill, like that hot air that when you exhale through your nose kind of ill.

Today weight is 213. If a pound a day is average, I'm already loving this challenge and I'll be beyond my goal by the end.

I went to Valencia today to visit my dad. For those of you that have never been to Valencia, there is very little in the realm of vegan or vegetarian food.  I knew going in I would end up breaking my challenge, so I accepted my fate and had the exact opposite of what this diet encompasses. I was back on by the time I got back home and I will be back at full speed tomorrow.  I might even call tomorrow "Day 2 Part 2: Revenge of the Previous Day 2 - Electric Boogaloo" - meh, I'll work on it.

I noticed I look at a menus at face value,  I automatically assume there aren't going to be other options that aren't listed. I'm assuming many people do this as well? I could have asked if there were egg substitute, tofu or something even more specific. I would have bought the veggie burrito on the whole wheat tortilla if I had only asked.

I'll pretend that every restaurant has a secret menu like In-N-Out does. This will cover all my bases and I'll learn as I go.

My activity level was low, but I did walk for a bit through the Japanese Garden in Van Nuys.

My personal observations about myself-
  1. When I am telling myself I can't have something, I seem to want it more. Cheese Pizza, cookies and anything with olive oil sound great to me. I'm going to be strong for this. I want to see it work.
  2. I need... I mean, I NEED to drink more water. I don't know why, but I seem to not be drinking as much water the last few days. I've honestly had maybe 32 ounces in the last 72 hours. For those of you that are reading this, drink a glass of water for me would ya! That in mind, I'll be buying a half gallon bottle to carry around with me tomorrow. No more excuses for the smallest things. Geez.

Breakfast
Spinach Feta Omelet, Potatoes, Whole Wheat Toast
Coffee (1/2 Decaf, black)

Lunch/Snack
Vegan Raisin Spice cookies from Kaldi Coffee in Atwater Village
Coffee (Yes, more coffee)

Drive Home/Snack
Raw Almonds

Dinner
Left over cheeseless pizza from last night

Day 1

The 28 day challenge has begun. This morning, I am 214 lbs.

Yesterday I ate pretty well, pretty much the same that is written below. I suppose it was more of a way to prime my system to the influx of plant based foods. However I did wrap up the day with coffee and cookies.  I also watched the documentary Forks of Knives to get my motivation for this task going.

My biggest craving waking up this morning was coffee.  After a good bowl of cereal, I spent an hour at 24 Hour Fitness for a yoga class. This was the 2nd time I have ever done yoga that was not recorded by the Nintendo Wii. The Wii is no comparison to the real activity and I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to have their ass kicked and feel good about it.

The lethargy hit around around 2 and I needed at least a sip of coffee. I did tone down the large coffee to medium and I will keep up with the medium coffee for the next few days and then lower that to a small. Take baby steps right?

My sister gave me a bag of fake coffee called Teecino. It tastes like carob and earth... not just dirt, but earth, the whole thing, roots and all. After drinking 4 cups of it this evening, I can see how it would curb that coffee craving. I doubt it will be effect in the morning.

Day 2 Tomorrow.

Introduction

Hi. My name is Ryan and I could stand to lose a few pounds.

Let's be honest here, I could afford to lose 25 pounds and still have a few more to drop to be considered "underweight"... yet, I stand here as 'average'. That in mind, why is it that more than half of the  American average overweight or obese? Have settled and raised the bar for the next generation?

A bit about me:
I grew up overweight, then I was much less overweight, then I was borderline obese and back down to just plain overweight. I've dealt with this my whole life and I am pissed that it is a direct result of what I was expected to be eating! "Drink milk", "Eat Beef", "Cheese has calcium which means it's good for you" and the very lonely "An apple a day keeps the doctor away," that one is funny to me now. Eat one apple, but make sure you drink lots of milk to wash it down.

For the past few years I have been a pescatarian (seafood only) and for the last 8 months I have been a strict vegetarian. Prior to going vegetarian, if it wasn't bacon wrapped I wouldn't eat it. Unfortunately, just by changing my eating preference made only a limited dent in overall goals. Who ever said vegetarians are more healthy is a liar. My cheese and egg intake increased as did my love of bean and cheese burritos from Del Taco (Green Sauce w/ Sour Cream). Thick stacks of seitan (wheat meat) on a whole wheat bun is going to sit on anyone like a brick.

The beginning of this desire to do a more drastic change came from purchasing a Groupon for a 7 Day Raw Food plan at a local Raw Restaurant. Four meals a day for a week. While getting all of the calories my body needed, I was also cleansing my palate and just feeling great by the end. Since then I rarely use salt and I drink my coffee black and unsweetened.

I was first inspired by the documentary "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" to juice for as long as I could. Joe Cross travels across the U.S. while on a 60 day juice fast. His results are amazing as well as inspiring. My problem is that juicing is expensive and very time consuming. I had to end after about two weeks and I hit my budget for month prematurely.  I will probably introduce a juice or two a day after this challenge.

What the heck am I doing?
The purpose of this blog is to share in my successes and failures of the Engine 2 Diet - 28 Day Challenge.

The E2 Diet was created by Rip Esselstyn, a Firefighter from Austin, Texas to prove that you didn't have to eat meat to physically fit and healthy.

From the E2 Website:
"During his 10+ years as a professional triathlete, Rip had adopted a plant-based diet at the advice of his father, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, chief of surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, who discovered through medical research that a plant-based, low fat diet could reverse heart disease and diabetes.

"His plant-powered eating program is based on a diet of whole foods, including vegetables, whole grains, fruit, legumes, seeds and nuts and is designed to transform your body and your lifestyle in just 28 days."

In other words, no additional oils (with the exception of a barely any spray oil), no dairy, no eggs and no meat. This challenge isn't only to see if one can eat this way for a month, but really to see if I can make food in this manner! I am a fan of cooking and I've always used oils for it. Why is oil so bad? Because of the addition of saturated fats in a would be healthy meal. Olive oil is supposed to be good for you, but it still contains 15% saturated fat which goes against this challenge. Foods like Avocados already have oils in them that should at least curb the fat cravings.

My Goals:
My goal is post at the end of each day to report on my status, what meals I made and how I am feeling. I also keep an activity log, because let's face the facts, you're not going to lose anything if you don't at least walk around the block.

I am currently 212-215 pounds. The plan is to drop 20 during the next 28 days and to build up my physical endurance.

As soon as you see Day 1, the challenge has begun.

In the meantime, check out these documentaries if you are into improving your health as well (All 3 are available on Netflix):
